United States v. Georgia (voter rolls)

On September 30, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia dismissed the Justice Department's lawsuit demanding Georgia's full voter registration list, including Social Security numbers and dates of birth. Judge Victoria M. Calvert held that neither the National Voter Registration Act nor the Help America Vote Act requires a state to hand over that sensitive information, and that federal law does not preempt Georgia's voter-privacy statute. The court granted the state's motion to dismiss in part, denied the government's motion to compel, and closed the case, a loss for the Justice Department and a win for Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. The government's time to appeal to the Eleventh Circuit remained open as of late October 2026.
